As an online tutor I am considering using Paypal to receive payments, but there are many complaints about it, is it a legit company?

Paypal is a legit company and their money transfer system is usually effective and safe, the problem with Paypal is their complaint review system, which, despite having somewhat improved over the years, not-so-unoften awards scammers; as long as no one complains about your services on Paypal everything will or should be fine.

If someone complains, claiming for example that they did not receive the service you promised, you may be in trouble. As a general rule Paypal applies the rule ‘the customer is always right’, it’s up to you to convince them otherwise. Note that their review of complaints is often done quickly and by not-so-well trained employees who can also be nationality biased; for example. if a student in India tries to scam a tutor in the US, he may have a hard time to get a refund, while for a student in the US to scam a tutor in India, would or could be much easier; a simple ‘the service was of such a low quality that I am not satisfied with it’ may be enough for Paypal to reverse the payment(s) the student made to you. In principle you can appeal to an unfair decision but that’s usually a waste of time. In general, as a tutor, should a dispute arise, make sure you have evidence that the lesson took place and you provided the agreed service.
