Wise, formerly known as Transferwise, has charged me a fee of about 25$ for a payment I have never received. Has my account been hacked? What could have happened?

While wise is a rather amazing payment platform that allows one to receive payments from tens of countries almost as he or she was a local, their platform or rather some aspects of it, are still in a developing stage. Since Wise has charged you and you did not receive any payment, this is most likely what happened: a client made a payment to your Wise account by using a method which is currently not supported by Wise. Instead of just rejecting the payment at the beginning, the payment went through but was never delivered to your Wise account and had to be returned to the client’s account. What Wise is charging you is the return fee for the wrong payment the client made or rather for the wrong method he or she used.

When you are planning to receive a payment from a given country, make sure you understand their terms and conditions and the supported payment methods. Note that not all unsupported payment methods will result in Wise charging you, but only some of them, and that is clearly specified by Wise. When in doubt, it would be advisable that you discuss the payment method the client is supposed to use, before the client makes the payment.
