Since I am struggling to get students Iocally I want to switch to online tuition

In my town, as an in-person tutor working locally, I am struggling to get students due to strong local competition. I want to switch to online tuition since getting students nationwide and internationally should be easier and I could work with different time zones.

While online tutoring holds great potential, getting students, especially non-locally, is in most cases not very easy. As an online tutor you will in fact be facing very strong competition from fellow tutors working both locally and non-locally; if you do not have experience marketing your services online to a broader, non-local audience you will find it very challenging at least the beginning. You should also consider that many people are still sceptical about online tuition and are at most ‘open to try it’ though they would still prefer an in-person tutor if they have a choice. I am a big fan of online tuition but if you have a local market and can’t find students locally for traditional tutoring, going online non-locally and internationally will make finding students even more difficult; an exception to this would be if you are willing to work for a company where they would provide students for you but, even if you work for a company, there would still be strong competition with other tutors, and most companies would probably provide you only a few students at best.

The situation is better if you are working on a niche subject or a niche exam where there are only a few specialist willing to tutor it. Among my expertise, got example, I tutor a very specific entrance exam and clients typically have no problem hiring me non-locally since I am one the only few experts tutoring such exam. For more general and common subjects and exams I typically have to offer some extra incentives in order to get students non-locally.
