When replying to an enquiry, should I give prices in my currency or in the potential client’s currency?
A common mistake inexperienced tutors make when trying to get international clients is to give their hourly rates in their own currency rather than in the potential client’s currency. They usually do that to avoid confusion about currency exchange rates and to make sure they always get exactly the same amount in their currency for each lesson, that usually results in the potential client not purchasing any lesson. One should consider that most people still need an incentive in order to hire a non-local online tutor and can also be skeptical about, or at least not familiar with online payment methods. Prices given in a currency other than theirs could easily put them off which would translate in losing the potential client. My suggestion, and that’s what I usually do, would be the following: set your prices in your own currency and convert them to the client’s currency when you reply to an inquiry (if necessary you may add a small extra to account to transfer and conversion fees which are typically on the tutor’s side). Since currency fluctuations between major currencies are typically small, once or twice a year you can adjust your hourly rates to the new exchange rate if necessary; I have been doing it with many international clients over the years and not a single one has complained about currency fluctuations.
